Aris Avenue - Woolf Architecture

First design meeting….

Me- “How do you envision your new house?”

Clients- “We just hosted a Game of Thrones season finale party for all of our friends. We want you to design a house that can host such a party.”

I was all over it. What a fun challenge!

First things first – we need an open floor plan where the kitchen, living room, and dining room all open up to each other so guests can move easily through the spaces AND see the flatscreen from just about anywhere. Second – we need an awesome house design.

The owners had an image of a sloped Tudor style roof. The sloped roof was the jumping off point for the design. We took that idea and developed it into what I call ‘Southern Tudor’. The roof slopes down over a southern front porch and there is a wall-mounted gas lantern over the entry. The lap siding was painted in a soft, historic shade of green and accented by blue-grey shutters. I’m always inspired by what my clients want and when they mentioned having some sort of custom window design, I was excited to create a custom window as the focal point of the front porch. It is the first thing you see as you approach the entry. The window looks through to the gorgeous paneled dining room that flows right into the living room.

I’m thankful for projects in which the clients give me a long leash on design. In this project, I really wanted to have some fun and the clients were game. Upon entering the house, there is a staircase with an incredible curved wall-railing. Cut into the wall is a little arch opening that leads to a private powder room. As you walk past the staircase, you look up and there is a spectacular sunken window in the wall above. The deep window ‘walls’ angle out in a way that light spills down the staircase.

Is this a house that can host a Game of Thrones season finale party?
